A Busy April Begins at Rice University

A busy April for Cho-Liang Lin begins on April 2 at Rice University with American Inspiration, an evening of music by Leonard Bernstein (“Canon for Aaron”), John Harbison (“Sonata No. 1 for Violin and Piano”), Steven Stucky (“Sonata for Violin and Piano”), Lukas Foss (“Composer’s Holiday”), and Paul Schoenfield (“Sonata for Violin and Piano”). Jon Kimura Parker joins on piano.

Next, on April 5, Lin returns to La Jolla Music Society to celebrate the opening of its new hall, The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. The exuberant evening features everything from Bach to the Beatles, with stunning performances and musical surprises from Hilary Hahn, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, the Miró Quartet, as well as ukulele sensation Jake Shimabukuro, jookin phenom Lil Buck, and creative technologist Osman Koç. The evening also unites Lin with SummerFest Music Directors past and present—Inon Barnatan, David Finckel, Wu Han and Heiichiro Ohyama.

On April 14, Lin travels to West Virginia University, performing an evening of music with pianist Ching-Wen Hsiao. Lin then moves to Dallas, performing at the Dallas Chamber Music International on April 20 alongside Stephanie Jeong (violin), Atar Arad (viola), Clive Greensmith (cello), and Jon Kimura Parker (piano).

April closes with three touring performances of From Mendelssohn, presented by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, beginning on April 25 in Grand Rapids, MI. Joined by Inon Barnatan (piano), Paul Neubauer (viola), Jakob Koranyi (cello), and Romie de Guise-Langlois (clarinet), and features works by Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. Performances continue April 27 in Madison, NJ and April 28 in New York, NY.

March Concerts in China & US

Cho-Liang Lin begins a busy month on March 2, performing in concert with the Qingdao Symphony in Qingdao, China. Conducted by Zhang Guoyong, the concert includes Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No. 2 and Violin Concerto in D major, as well as Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra.

Next, on March 10, Lin performs with pianist Evelyn Chen and cellist Brinton Averil Smith at the Wortham Foundation Theatre in Houston, Texas. The trio performs Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A minor.

Towards the end of the month, Lin performs as part of the Sonoran Chamber Music Series with violist Aloysia Friedmann, cellist Tom Landschoot, and pianist Jon Kimura Parker. This concert is held on March 17 at Katzin Concert Hall, part of the Arizona State University.

Launching in 2019: The Taipei Music Academic Festival

This summer, Cho-Liang Lin launches his newest venture, the Taipei Music Academic Festival, where he will serve as Artistic Director. Designed for students and young professionals, the summer festival welcomes young musicians aged 15 to 30, offering the opportunity to work with a world class faculty in an immersive and inspiring environment. The festival runs at the National Taipei University of the Arts from July 30 to August 18, 2019.

Academy participants will choose either chamber music or chamber ensemble programs and will participate in the Festival Orchestra. Every musician will receive daily coaching and will perform alongside expert faculty in the Festival Orchestra. Master classes will be available to those interested in solo repertoire, as well as opportunities to build professional skills with mock orchestra auditions and orchestral excerpt tutorials.

Beare’s Premiere Music Festival 2019

The 10th Annual Beare's Premiere Music Festival (formerly known as the Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival) opens on January 16, with acclaimed mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato performing "In War & Peace: Harmony through Music," an evening of Baroque arias by Handel, Purcell, and more. 

Cho-Liang Lin serves as the festival's Artistic Director, and will be performing in three concerts throughout the festival: "Outside Elements" (January 20), "Forward Movement" (January 22), and "Viva Tango!" (January 24). Lin is joined by several esteemed artists, including Martin Beaver, Lise Berthaud, Julian Steckel, Andreas Haefliger, David Shifrin, Paul Huang, Evelyn Chang, Dover Quartet, and more. 

The festival also includes several outreach events, such as tango classes, lectures, open rehearsals, and free community concerts.

Cho-Liang Lin Tours Europe with the Louisiana Boathouse Ensemble

Next month, Cho-Liang Lin performs with the Louisiana Boathouse Ensemble for a series of concerts throughout Europe. Lin is joined by Andreas Haefliger (piano), Martin Beaver (violin), Lise Berthaud (viola), and Julien Steckel (cello). The concerts feature works by Elgar, Turnage, and Korngold.

The Ensemble then travels Hong Kong for Beare’s Premiere Music Festival 2019 (formerly the Hong Kong International Chamber Festival), where Lin serves as Artistic Director.

December Performances in Malaysia and Indonesia

On December 10, Cho-Liang Lin performs in a benefit concert at the Hotel Equatorial Penang, raising money for ROSE Charities Malaysia. Performing alongside pianist Ashley Tan, proceeds will go to support Charis Hospice, Penang Hospice Society, Pure Lotus Hospice of Compassion, Shan Children's Home, and Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Islam Pulau Pinang. 

Later, on December 15 and 16, Lin performs in two Christmas concerts with Aula Simfonia Jakarta. Lin is joined by James Huang (oboe) in a program featuring works by Bach, Brahms, Bernstein, and Willcocks. Dr. Jahja Ling conducts.
