TMAF 2019 Begins July 30!

Taipei Music Academy & Festival begins its inaugural season in less than a month, running July 30 - August 18, 2019!

Designed for students and young professionals, the summer festival welcomes young musicians aged 15 to 30 to the National Taipei University of the Arts. Program participants have the incredible opportunity work with a world-class faculty, including David Chan (violin), Lynn Harrell (cello), Gordon Hunt (oboe), David Washburn (trumpet), Jahja Ling (conductor), and many more.

The festival includes several exciting events, including the TMAF All-Star Concert (August 9), the Chamber Music Marathon (August 10), Rising Stars on Parade (August 11), and the TMAF Orchestra Concert (August 16).

Speaking on TMAF, Lin shares, "I wanted to create something that is very unique, which gives young talents the opportunity to coach and perform side-by-side every day with our incredible faculty. I want to create an exchange of ideas."

Performing at the Summer of Brahms

This month, Cho-Liang Lin travels to Pasadena to perform at the Summer of Brahms Chamber Music Festival, presented by the New Hollywood String Quartet and Restoration Concert Series. The festival presents all 25 instrumental chamber music works of Johannes Brahms in a series of eight consecutive concerts from Sunday, July 7th through Sunday July 14th 2019.

Lin makes three appearances throughout the festival, performing on July 12, 13, and 14 alongside world-renowned musicians including Paul Watkins (cello), Robert Thies (piano), Rohan De Silva (piano), Andrew Shulman (cello), Brian Chen (piano), and more.

The performances include Brahms’s Piano Trio No. 2 in C Major/Op. 87 (July 12), Violin Sonata No. 2 in A Major/Op.100 and Piano Trio No. 1 in B Major/Op. 8 (July 13), and Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor/ Op. 60 (July 14).

Performing with Taipei Chinese Orchestra

On June 12, Cho-Liang Lin performs with the Taipei Chinese Orchestra at the Taipei National Concert Hall. The evening includes two world premieres by Joel Hoffman, Nautilus Symmetry and Violin Concerto as well as Stravinksy’s The Rite of Spring, arranged for Chinese orchestra by Chenwei Wang. This performance marks the world premiere of Wang’s arrangement.

Upcoming Competitions in Montreal and Sendai

This spring, Cho-Liang Lin serves on the jury for international violin competitions in Montreal and Sendai.

From May 26 to June 6, Lin travels to Montreal for the Concours Musical International de Montréal (CMIM). Founded in 2001, CMIM is an annual event that draws over 6,000 spectators to enjoy the performances of emerging classical musicians.

Following a preliminary application, CMIM invites 24 of the most talented young violinists in the world to compete in Montreal. While participating in the competition, candidates work with some of the world’s greatest musicians and compete for over $100,000 in prizes and grants.

Later from June 15 to June 30, Lin serves as a jury member for the seventh edition of Sendai International Music Competition. Created by the City of Sendai in 2001 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the city, the competition is held every three years. The Sendai International Music Competition is highly unique in that it designates the concerto as the center of repertoire.

The Art of the Recital at Lincoln Center

On May 9, Cho-Liang Lin and Jon Kimura Parker (piano) perform at Lincoln Center, presenting an evening of music by John Harbison, Steven Stucky, Leonard Bernstein, Lukas Foss, and Paul Schoenfield.

The program will be livestreamed by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center beginning at 7:30 PM EDT.

From Mendelssohn with Chamber Music Society

This spring, Cho-Liang Lin joins the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center for a three-performance tour of From Mendelssohn, an evening of chamber music by Mendelssohn and his contemporaries.

Lin is joined by Inon Barnatan (piano), Paul Neubauer (viola), Jakob Koranyi (cello), and Romie de Guise-Langlois. The program is bookended by two works of Mendelssohn from 1845, as well as works by Schumann, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky.

The tour begins on April 25 at the St. Cecilia Music Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan and continues on April 27 at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. For the final performance, the ensemble returns to Lincoln Center, performing at Alice Tully Hall in New York, New York on April 28.
