SummerFest 2012 breaks new musical ground

La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest 2012, led by its Music Director Cho-Liang Lin, breaks new musical ground with a series of programs that explore music from Haydn to Tan Dun, from classical to tango, and from the familiar to the new. One of the many highlights of the season includes Oscar-winning composer Tan Dun’s Water Passion after St. Matthew, conducted by the composer himself at the La Jolla Playhouse on August 4.

SummerFest 2012 prominently features the music of Franz Schubert, with two programs devoted entirely to the German composer (August 14 & 21) and a third that places Schubert’s work in dialogue with his successors, including songs by the young composer Gabriel Kahane (August 7). Celebrated conductor Kent Nagano leads the SummerFest Chamber Orchestra throughout the festival, conducting Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2  and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 (August 24).

The saxophonist Branford Marsalis joins the SummerFest musicians for works by Hindemith and Busch and will also perform with his own ensemble (August 8). For those, like Lin, who enjoy tango, SummerFest 2012 presents the tango master Pablo Ziegler and the Ziegler Classical Tango Quartet (August 18).

This summer’s program will also include more familiar works, performed by veteran SummerFest collaborators. Cellist Gary Hoffman, pianist Jon Kimura Parker, and Lin will perform the complete Brahms Trios (August 22). The Tokyo Quartet will also present works by Beethoven, Haydn, and Elgar (August 12).

SummerFest 2012 festival also continues the festival’s tradition of expanding the repertoire. The August 10 Commissions and Premieres concert will present new works by Gabriel Kahane, Ellen Taafe Zwilich, Aaron Jay Kernis, and Marc-André Dalbavie.

The Festival opens with a free Outdoor Concert at Ellen Browning Scripps Park on July 31st, featuring Lin, SummerFest artists and the San Diego Youth Symphony’s International Youth Symphony. The Opening Night concert entitled "A Romantic Promenade" features works by Moszkowski, Villa-Lobos, and Rachmaninoff.

La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest 2012 runs from July 31 - August 24, 2012.
